In such a difficult time, the United States provided help to assist Taiwan in overcoming the challenges after the disaster. On August 14, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially requested U.S. heavy-lift helicopters to carry excavators and bulldozers into the mountains of Kaohsiung County to clear roads to villages cut off by landslides. The USS Denver, based in Sasebo, Japan, reached Taiwan territorial waters on August 17 and deployed two helicopters to Tainan Airport to begin what would become three days of operation in support of disaster relief, including ferrying heavy equipment to the mountainous areas of Kaohsiung County.
